What is a Fire Investigator?

The role of the fire investigator is to examine the fire and/or explosion scene in order to determine the area of origin for the incident, and, determine causative factors which created the fire incident.  Whether from the stand point of a criminal investigation by local authorities or a civil investigation by private fire investigators, the role of the investigator is to conduct an impartial, unbiased investigation with the end result being a cause determination based upon the formulation and testing of hypothesis from information gathered from the scene.  Conclusions formed based upon such an investigation can then be reported to all interested parties.

Ethics is an integral aspect of the role of the fire investigator.  As an International Association of Arson Investigators Certified Fire Investigator, S. M. Brozgold Fire Investigations believes in and adheres to the Code of Ethics as set forth by the International Association of Arson Investigators (see below). We believe this is a good example for all fire investigators to follow.  Being a “truth-seeker, not a case-maker” will ensure that an investigator will use their knowledge and training properly in order to determine factual information regarding an incident.

  • I will conduct both my personal and official life so as to inspire the confidence of the public.

  • I will not use my profession and my position of trust for personal advantage or profit.

  • I will regard my fellow investigators with the same standards as I hold for myself.

  • I will never betray a confidence nor otherwise jeopardize their investigation.

  • I will regard it my duty to know my work thoroughly. It is my further duty to avail myself of every opportunity to learn more about my profession.

  • I will avoid alliances with those whose goals are inconsistent with an honest and unbiased investigation.

  • I will make no claim to professional qualifications which I do not possess.

  • I will share all publicity equally with my fellow investigators, whether such publicity is favorable or unfavorable.

  • I will be loyal to my superiors, to my subordinates, and to the organization I represent.

  • I will bear in mind always that I am a truth-seeker not a case maker; that it is more important to protect the innocent than to convict the guilty.

S. M. Brozgold Fire Investigations, LLC utilizes the basic methodology of fire investigation and relies on the use of a systematic approach.  This approach is that of a scientific method, which is recommended by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).  This recommendation is documented in the NFPA 921, Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations (2017 edition).  The purpose of NFPA 921 is to assist the investigators who are charged with the responsibility of investigating and analyzing fire and explosion incidents to render opinions as to the origin, cause, responsibility, or prevention of such incidents.

S. M. Brozgold Fire Investigations, LLC will provide these services to our clients.  Our mission is to provide a thorough, ethical and efficient investigation related to fire origin and cause determination and to report our findings in a timely manner.
